“BULLIED” Examines What It’s Like To Be The Gay Kid On The Playground

“As a kid, I wasn’t as bullied as I thought I would be, probably because I basically put up a wall and kept people away,” reveals Michael Musto, the famed Village Voice columnist and celebrated book author. “But naturally, being different and being myself, I’ve always been the target of name-calling and other discrimination.”
He recalls one particular incident as an adolescent walking home from school when a girl, sitting on her stoop, hatefully yelled out “What are you looking at, faggot?”
“I should have yelled back, “Nothing much, moron” but was so shocked by the random hate,” he explains. “That incident helped fuel my later drive to reach out and give support to anyone who’s the victim of bullying.”
