Nearly 30 years since that fateful night, one of the most tragic events to impact the theater community continues to reverberate. The unexpected passing of theatermaker Jonathan Larson the day preview performances began for the Broadway transfer of Rent left family, loved ones, and cast members in shock. The musical would win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical. At 35 years old, Larson had so much more to give. Newly discovered archives—bits and pieces from shows that didn’t see the light of day, pop songs he dreamt would make the Billboard 100, and trunk songs that marked the beginnings of what might have been the most prolific musical theater composer of the 21st century.
