At first glance, it was the unlikeliest of friendships. I served as editor of the left-wing Vassar College student newspaper, Unscrewed. He was a self-styled “moderate conservative” English professor who contributed to William F. Buckley’s National Review.

Yet the moment I entered Thomas Mallon’s English literature class way back in the Spring of 1986, I was smitten. He was whip smart, funny as hell, a gorgeous prose stylist, and, I would soon realize, had a soft-spoken kindness that contradicted my youthful stereotypes of right-wingers.

It wasn’t long before I was sitting in his tidy Vassar English Department office pouring my heart out about the sorrows and joys of coming out–only to learn, perhaps not totally to my surprise, that he was, well, sympatico.
