Nevada has become the first state in the nation to protect same-sex marriage in its Constitution.

On Tuesday, a supermajority of voters repealed a 2002 amendment that had defined marriage as between one man and one woman.

“Marriage would be defined as between couples, regardless of gender, though religious organizations and clergypersons would have the right to refuse to solemnize a marriage,” read Question 2.

The New York Times reports that 61.2 percent of voters supported this new definition of marriage, versus 38.8 percent, with 86 percent of votes reported Wednesday evening.
