Pope Francis Calls For Civil Unions For Same-Sex Couples In Major Departure From Catholic Doctrine
In a new documentary, Pope Francis officially endorsed same-sex civil unions for the first time as pontiff, in remarks that break from the Catholic Church’s official teaching and mark his clearest support to date for the issue.
Francis made the remarks while being interviewed for the feature-length documentary “Francesco,” which premiered Wednesday at the Rome Film Festival.
The papal embrace of civil unions came midway through the film that delves into issues Francis cares about most, including the environment, poverty, migration, racial and income inequality, and the people most affected by discrimination.
