In Elvis Presley’s 1956 hit “Don’t Be Cruel,” the crooner playfully pleads his would-be lover, “Don’t be cruel to a heart that’s true” over a jaunty guitar.
But the opening of Brazilian filmmaker Daniel Nolasco’s romantic drama Only Good Things is scored by country singer Billy Swan’s slowed-down cover of the song, which manages to make that same line—”Don’t be cruel to a heart that’s true”—sound more like a warning.
That ominous needle drop sets the tone for a surreal saga of love, loss, and longing for the ages.
